I thought i would do my Vintage Thingies Thursday post early this week. Visit Coloradolady to see all the others!
Here are some Gnome ornaments that my family used to hang on our Christmas tree during my childhood in the fifties and sixties.
My brother and I were totally enchanted by them when we were kids. Each gnome is sitting in a little bower which has 4 metal legs like a little stool on the bottom. Four of them are holding paper instruments and one a song book. Their arms and legs are pipe cleaners, their faces plastic, their bodies looked like a covered bead to me then I squeezed one and realized they are hollow thin plastic spheres covered with flock or thin felt. Each one is sitting on a tiny pine cone, in my memory, I thought their bodies were made out of pine cones, but no.
We've been after Mom to give them to us for years. I just found them in her Christmas closet yesterday and she agreed that we could have them. Not sure how we'll divide them up.
I'd like to make new ones.
If you are interested in making Garden plate flowers check out my tutorial, part 1 posted Sunday and part 2 this morning.

ReplyDeleteThese are so cute!!!!! Of all of things that my husband could like vintage, he loves these little gnomes! Go figure! LOL
ReplyDeleteOH, my GOODNESS! I am so totally in love with those. If I could find them I would buy them up so fast! Wow! Those are just amazing!
ReplyDeleteVery retro and so cute. Too bad they have split up.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't split them up yet. But I sent the link to here to my brother. Maybe we should take turns keeping them all. I thought there were more than 5, but this is all that mom had.

No matter how many you end up with, they will certainly add to your tree. I enjoyed your blog very much and hope to see more of you. Thank you for visiting and leaving me a nice comment.
ReplyDeleteAdorable, I remember those type of decorations. How fun that you get to have them now.
ReplyDeleteWell, it seems pretty obvious that if you and your brother are dividing them, there will be an extra one and you should probably send that one to me!! These are sooo cute! Reminds me of how transfixed I always was with the ornaments on my grandparents' tree. I feel so lucky to have them now and they're the first ones to go on the tree!
ReplyDeleteHappy VTT!
Carol
How sweet! How very cute.
ReplyDeleteLOL at the "not sure how we'll divide them". Brothers and Sisters will never stop being brothers and sisters. He may boink you over the head for a gnome.
The gnome ornaments are adorable. Isn't it funny how certain ornaments or decorations can flood you with memories?
ReplyDeleteI looked at some of your other posts and I love your plate flowers. They look beautiful and are so creative.
Have a great weekend.

Actually my mom had written on the box "Christmas Elves". So HC Quilter is right. This is how history gets the whisper down the lane effect, lol. I have thought of them, at least all my adult life, as the Christmas gnomes.

Oh MY ~ I have seen those ornaments on Ebay and wanted them ~ well let's just say there were totally out of my price range! They are adorable! Thanks for sharing ~ Judi
ReplyDeleteThose are lovely! I have never seen them before, but those are cool!

Well thanks to Judi, I looked on Ebay and watched and watched and i finally got a few auctions of the elves that went for a relatively reasonable price and was able to put together a set of 5 for my brother for Christmas! And we each got one in a sleigh as well (tho his still has the pinecone). He had told me that he didn't want us to divide the original set. I have some left over that is they are repeats. I guess I'll sell them on ebay next December.
